How to Budget for a Bathroom Remodel

Remodeling your bathroom can make a real difference to your home, and improve your quality of life and home resale value.

If you’re tired of drab bathroom design, outdated fixtures or just want to make your mark on your own home, a bathroom remodel could be just what you need.

The first step to any remodel is to calculate how much you have to spend, set a budget with a little room for maneuver, and stick to it.

How Much Does a Bathroom Remodel Cost?

The cost of remodeling a bathroom can vary hugely, depending on how big of a project you want your remodel to be. Simple bathroom updates can be completed for as little as $3000, but a very high end remodel can reach 100,000 or more.

With so many options available, you can keep your remodel as simple as you like, or make it as extravagant as you wish. Typically, a bathroom remodel will fall somewhere between $9,000 and $30,000.

The most important thing to do is to choose a bathroom remodeling budget that works for you. Remember that with any remodel, there’s no guarantee that everything will go to plan, so leave some room for flexibility.

If you plan to remodel to sell your home, bear in mind other factors that will limit the value of your home. Don’t spend more than you can ever hope to recuperate unless it’s for your own personal enjoyment and quality of life.

Remodeling in Stages

If you can’t afford to complete a full remodel right away, there’s no reason why you can’t update your bathroom in stages.

Consider upgrading your lighting, or adding new countertops. If you know you have several projects in mind, combing these could save on labor costs.

According to the National Kitchen and Bath Association, cabinetry and hardware will be your biggest expense, at about 16% of your total budget. Fixtures come second, at 15%, and faucets/ plumbing at 14%.

Flooring, countertops, lighting, ventilation, walls, doors and windows should each come to less than 10% of your total budget.

Don’t forget to include the cost of labor! Installation is likely to cost 20% of your overall budget, not including design fees and other costs.
