Bathroom Design Tips: Ventilation

It may not be the most glamorous topic, but ventilating your bathroom is an important part of keeping it looking clean, fresh and new. Improper ventilation can cause condensation, and trapped, moist air can lead to mold growth. However, if you consider ventilation when designing your bathroom, you can keep these issues to a minimum.

Bathroom Windows

Opening bathroom windows is one easy way to let fresh air flow in and out of your bathroom. Just opening the window a crack during or after showering can help ventilation. Windows can also help prevent mold growth by letting in sunlight – mold loves to grow in damp, dark places, so the warmth and light of the sun can deteriorate growth.

  • If you’re building from scratch, be sure to include large or multiple windows in your bathroom design.
  • Remember to open your blinds after showering in the morning.
  • Remember to open your windows after taking a hot shower
  • Make the windows a part of your bathroom design. Choose window frames you love, or paint them a color that will add to your overall design.
  • Don’t forget about insulation – windows are also important for keeping your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Choose energy-efficient windows to stay comfortable year-round and save money on heating and cooling.

Windows in the bathroom can provide some much needed ventilation.

Bathroom Fans

Even with large windows, a high-quality, efficient fan is a must for a well-ventilated bathroom, to prevent additional humidity in your home and prevent mold growth.

  • Bathroom vent fans should be vented to the outside only, not to your attic. Pushing condensation to your attic area will just create wood rot, mold and mildew in this part of your home instead.
  • The size or power of your fan should be suitable for the space – a larger space will require a more powerful fan.
  • Your exhaust fan should be installed through an exterior wall, the ceiling or through a window.
  • Choose an undercut door to allow air from outside the bathroom to be exchanged with the damp air within the room.

Fans help prevent condensation from humidity within the bathroom.

Use a Dehumidifier

A good dehumidifier can also help with bathroom ventilation. It is a quick, easy and inexpensive solution to improving the air in your bathroom.

  • A dehumidifier will draw moisture from the air, also helping to prevent mold growth and reduce humidity.
  • You can keep track of the humidity levels in your home with a hygrometer.
